Sophomore Service Project
Overview of SSP Goals and Requirements:
The Brophy sophomore service requirement is composed of 40 hours of service, a supervisor evaluation form, and a final reflection. These 40 hours of service must be completed through an organization that provides the student with an opportunity to work directly with children. Due to the flexibility of this requirement, sophomores can complete their service in a number of ways. Students can participate in Brophy's Loyola Project or they can find an outside institution that alligns more closely with their skills and interests. However, whether the project is tutoring school children, coaching a youth basketball team, or volunteering at an after-school program, students are challenged to be mentors to the kids they work with.
As "Men for Others" Brophy sophomores are encouraged to volunteer their time and build relationships with children in the community. In addition to the considerable good that students can contribute to the lives of the children they encounter, mentoring relationships also provide Brophy students with insights into the lives of teachers, parents, coaches and children. Through these new experiences students learn about different worldviews and begin to understand the people that hold them. This is an important component of Jesuit community service and solidarity.
In order to successfully complete their sopomore
service project, each sophomore should follow these steps:
1. Research your options
and register for a project (this is done at the end of freshman
year)
2. Select a specific agency/site for your
project
3. Begin work! Keep track of your time as
you complete your 40 hours
4. Turn in a timesheet, evaluation, and final
reflection
1. Research
your options and register
for a project: Sophomores can choose between Brophy's Loyola Project or an independent Community Mentoring Project to complete their SSP. Students should consult with
their parents and carefully review their scholastic and extra-curricular commitments as they decide between Summer, Fall, or Spring Loyola Project
or a Community Mentoring Project.
- Loyola Project:
Sophomores are encouraged to participate in Brophy’s Loyola
Project to fulfill their Sophomore Service Project. Loyola Project
is a Brophy tutoring program which places students as tutors
and mentors in schools and organizations in central Phoenix.
Faculty serve as Loyola Project moderators, and are on-site at
all times. Sophomores can serve as Loyola Project tutors in one
of the following ways:
• Summer Loyola Project:
June 3-June 27 on Brophy’s campus; 8:30 a.m.-Noon, Monday-Friday.
• Fall or Spring Loyola Project:
Either Tues./Thurs. or Mon./Wed. after school in the Fall or
Spring Semester. Students take Brophy vans to area elementary
schools; vans leave at 3:00 p.m., return at 5 p.m.
For more information about Loyola
Project, follow this link.
- Community Mentoring Project:
Sophomores who elect not to participate in Loyola Project can
enroll in the Community Mentoring Project (CMP). The CMP provides students with an opportunity to volunteer with children at an organization or their choice. Good options include elementary schools, community centers, and youth organizations. Students should also consult the OFJ's list of approved agencies. Students have
the entire year to complete the community mentoring project. Work
can begin as early as June 1, and it needs to be completed by April 18th.
- Register for a project: All freshmen must register for a project in the spring of 2008 with their counselors.
2. Select
a specific site or agency: Once you have registered
online for a specific project, you will need to select a specific
site or agency. Follow the directions below that correspond to the
project you've registered for:
- Students who have registered for Loyola
Project: You will need to attend a series of orientation
meetings at the beginning of the semester you are registered for.
At these meetings, you'll discuss expectations, different tutoring
strategies, and which grade-level you'd be most comfortable with.
Summer Loyola Project orientation will be held in mid-April.
3. Begin
your work!
- Once you have registered for a project online, selected an agency,
attended the LP orientation or confirmed your community mentoring
project with OFJ, you should begin your work.
- Summer Loyola Project participants need to attend each day of
Summer LP, Fall/spring guys will complete their hours if they
attend LP every M/W or T/TH throughout the semester.
- Community Mentoring Project guys need to talk to their agencies
and figure out how time will be tracked. It is the student's responsibility
to make sure that his time is accounted for. A timesheet is available here if the agency doesn't
provide one.
4. Have
supervisor complete the evaluation, write your final reflection
paper, and turn in materials to the OFJ
- When you have completed your work, have your supervisor complete
this evaluation form.
- When your work is complete, reflect on your experience. Follow
this link for directions.
