Horses Help

North Phoenix

Robin: robin.m@horseshelp.org (Best way to reach her) or 602-569-6056

If you like horses, this agency is for you.  Horses Help provides therapeutic horseback riding for handicapped children and adults. Volunteers are needed to assist the riders and care for the horses.   This placement has afforded Brophy students the chance to confront their misconceptions about handicapped people:

  •  "As I worked with a young girl who was not verbal and suffered from some kind of mental retardation, I touched on things that I had never thought about before.  It was an intoxicating feeling.  It made me want to know everything about this person's illness: How she felt, what she was thinking. I couldn't help but wonder what was going on in her head. This is when I started to understand why I was here." (Taylor Adams '04, Summer '02)
  • 6 week ride sessions beginning Sept. 18th through July.  Volunteers are needed in the afternoon and evening seesions and/or Saturday mornings.
  • This can also be a summer placement with olunteers needed for summer camp. 2007 dates TBA. Volunteers would work 3 days a week during the camp, from 7-11 AM each day. Some help is also needed for weekend and evening riders.
  • Visit www.horseshelp.org for more info.

Upward Foundation

7th St. and Bethany Home

Volunteer Coordinator- Linda Kirkland: 279-5801

This is a school for handicapped children.  Volunteers are needed to help run activities with children after school and during the summer. Volunteers are needed each day from 8:30-2:30. These volunteers will serve as aids in the school that serves children who are disabled. Some volunteers are also needed until 5pm to help with child care.

  • "As I walk away from the fifty hours I spent with those cute little rascals, I see what I really have gained.  Those kids have unknowingly changed my life forever.  Aside from the abilities to be silly and patient which I acquired, I have also gained so much more confidence in every aspect of my life.  Being a role model to those children showed me rather bluntly what its like to be in a leadership position.  I know I am a forever-changed person, and I only hope that I left a similar impact on those children."  (Robbie Gruler '04, Summer '02)

Volunteer Info:

  • Call Ms. Kirkland to request an application. You must complete an application before your contract can be signed.

WORKING WITH THE ELDERLY

Highland Manor

14th St. and Highland - Very close to Brophy!

Volunteers are needed to play games and spend time with elderly residents.

  • I felt a sense of camaraderie with the staff and the residents.  Whenever I walk down the hall of Highland Manor I see so many people I know, from the nurses and staff to the residents. I found that being open to others has allowed me to form relationships with others, making me more comfortable with them and them with me. (Sam Estes '04, summer '02)

Volunteer Info:

  • Volunteers are needed on weekends and some weekday evenings.

  • Contact the volunteer coordinator Angela Mann - 264-9039

Hospice of the Valley

Locations Vary.  18 hour training session required and 60 hour commitment- a great site for those interested in the medical profession.

Volunteers have the opportunity to spend quality one-on-one time with patients: visiting, reading, playing cards, sharing stories.  Volunteers can also help patients chronicle their life stories and significant events through: interviewing, journaling, creating memory books, and videographing.  This is a tremendous opportunity for students with an interest in medicine.

SOUP KITCHENS/HOSPITALITY HOUSES

Andre House of Hospitality

Downtown Phoenix- 11th Ave. and Madison

Amber: 255-0580

Andre House is an agency that provides services to the homeless. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve the nightly meal and  help sort clothes for the clothes closet.

  • While serving water, I began to talk to people, asking how they were.  When asked, they would suddenly brighten up and start smiling.  For some of these people, it was the first time that day which a person asked them how they were doing.  I began to realize that their lives are similar to our own.  Also in our society we have a tendency to forget or ignore those who are in need of help.  However, we should embrace them and help them, letting them into our lives and community. (Alex Petuskey '04, summer '02)

Volunteer Info:

  • Volunteers are needed to help with dinner every night but Friday: 3-7.  Some Saturdays sorting clothes: 1-3.

  • NOTE: Each Sunday, a Brophy teacher will drive a van down to Andre House at 3:00 and return to school at 7. If you'd like to participate in this program- see Mrs. Baldwin. This Sunday experience only happens during the school year- summer community action guys are on their own for transportation/arranging their hours with Andre House.

Michelle: 480-464-2370.

Students are needed to help prepare an evening meal for homeless guests and prepare and distribute food boxes.

  • All in all, I would say that my experience at Paz de Cristo has been great because of all the new things that I get to see and all of the people that I get to meet. This experience has exceeded any expectations I had possessed. (Jon Cline '04, summer '02)

  • If interested, call: 480-464-2370 and ask for Michelle to get set up with a program.

Denise: 261-6886 or email at: DBrittain@svdp-phx-az.org

Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve evening meal.  Many opportunities available- flexible schedule.

  • My thoughts about the service were mixed at first. My first thoughts about the job were that it smelled and was boring.  However, as time went by, I became more and more interested in helping the people as much as I possibly could.  I opened my mind to growth and it led me to maturity and understanding.  I was able to do my job with a positive attitude, not watching the clock.  This project has truly shown me what being open to growth is. (Mike Allison '04, summer '02)

Volunteer Info:

  • Volunteers are needed from 3:30-7 to help prepare the evening meal each night. Other opportunities are available for those who need more flexible scheduling.

Changing Gears

St. Vincent DePaul's Bike Repair Program

420 W. Watkins- Downtown

Denise: 261-6886

Students are needed to help mentor area youth as they rebuild discarded bikes for homeless people and eventually they will eventually take a bike home.

  •  To me, this isn't just a program about getting unsuspecting children to do slave labor and rebuild bikes for other people, but it is an opportunity to get together with your friends and learn about different things from fixing a gear to how to not start fights with kids who you don't like at school.  This program has really been a great experience for me thus far. (Matt Cicinelli '04, summer '02)

  • After having completed my Junior Justice Project I believe that I have gone through a type of transformation.  My views, thoughts, and ideas have greatly been altered by this experience.  The many different types of people I was able to come in contact with was a key factor that helped me transform into a more caring and loving individual. After having completed this project I now believe that we must all do our part to correct the many injustices that exist in our world. (Bernard Gutmann '04, summer '02)
