WORKING WITH
THE ELDERLY
Highland Manor
14th
St. and Highland - Very close to Brophy!
Volunteers
are needed to play games and spend time with elderly residents.
-
I
felt a sense of camaraderie with the staff and the residents.
Whenever I walk down the hall of Highland Manor I see so many
people I know, from the nurses and staff to the residents.
I found that being open to others has allowed me to form relationships
with others, making me more comfortable with them and them
with me. (Sam Estes '04, summer '02)

session required and 60 hour commitment- a great site for those
interested in the medical profession.

in medicine.

Their volunteer training is approved for community college credit at three (soon MCC) community colleges. Two credit hours.
Volunteers have two options:

While serving water, I began to talk to people, asking how
they were. When asked, they would suddenly brighten
up and start smiling. For some of these people, it was
the first time that day which a person asked them how they
were doing. I began to realize that their lives are
similar to our own. Also in our society we have a tendency
to forget or ignore those who are in need of help. However,
we should embrace them and help them, letting them into our
lives and community. (Alex Petuskey '04, summer '02)

My
thoughts about the service were mixed at first. My first thoughts
about the job were that it smelled and was boring. However,
as time went by, I became more and more interested in helping
the people as much as I possibly could. I opened my
mind to growth and it led me to maturity and understanding.
I was able to do my job with a positive attitude, not watching
the clock. This project has truly shown me what being
open to growth is. (Mike Allison '04, summer '02)

Students are needed to help
mentor area youth as they rebuild discarded bikes for homeless
people and eventually they will eventually take a bike home.
-
To me, this isn't just a program about getting unsuspecting
children to do slave labor and rebuild bikes for other people,
but it is an opportunity to get together with your friends
and learn about different things from fixing a gear to how
to not start fights with kids who you don't like at school.
This program has really been a great experience for me thus
far. (Matt Cicinelli '04, summer '02)

After having completed my Junior Justice Project I believe
that I have gone through a type of transformation. My
views, thoughts, and ideas have greatly been altered by this
experience. The many different types of people I was
able to come in contact with was a key factor that helped
me transform into a more caring and loving individual. After
having completed this project I now believe that we must all
do our part to correct the many injustices that exist in our
world. (Bernard Gutmann '04, summer '02)

Crisis
Nursery provides services to youth at risk. Their shelter provides
emergency shelter for young children whose parents are in crisis/can't
care for them for a period of time. The FACES programaddresses
the needs of at-risk children who live in their own homes but
whose families need support.
-
It
blows my mind to think how a few hours out of my day from
a school required project can have such a profound positive
effect in my life. I enjoyed watching great values being instituted
into the children. My relationships with the children
there are unforgettable and will offer great insight into
relationships for the rest of my life. I have a feeling
of gratitude and love that I cannot fully express. (Daniel

better. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work
