Brophy Immersion Trip to

Juarez, Mexico

History of the Juarez Trip

The Brophy Juarez trip was begun in 1999 while Mr. Tim Broyles, who teaches English and Spanish at Brophy College Prep., was living there with his wife, Claire.  Mr.. Broyles had been teaching at Brophy before then, but he and his wife decided that they needed to take a break from their Phoenix lives and thought it a good idea for them to move to Juarez to live and work among the residents there.  Juarez, which sits right across the U.S-Mexico border from El Paso, Texas, is an impoverished city greatly affected by the United States economy.  There are a number of maquiladoras--or U.S.-owned factories--that employ many  residents from Juarez, so there is a much greater connection between the countries there than many understand.  When Mr. Broyles decided to return to Brophy and 2000, he vowed to keep the Juarez trip going so that Brophy students could continue to get a perspective on life in Mexico, on some of the social injustices permeating border life, and on what their roles are in working toward a more just world.

Details of the Juarez Trip

Students apply for the Juarez trip as their potential Junior Justice Project.  Applications are weighed with faculty input to select the group.  The trip itself includes a variety of immersion activities, such as listening to guest speakers and spending a day with a church youth group, as well as a house-building project funded by the Brophy Lenten Drive, which benefits a family in Juarez.  Students will journal each evening, and reflection discussions will take place most nights.

2008 Dates: May 25th - June 3rd
