During the first spring break in February, we offer
a trip to Nuestros
Pequeños Hermanos, an orphanage in Miacatlan,
Mexico. The students would spend time at the orphanage, working
with the children in various capacities from helping them with
their chores to challenging them in games of soccer or softball
to spending a day with them at a water park. Each Brophy student
forms a close bond with his student, acting as a friend and mentor
to the child. Students will spend time in prayer and reflecting,
looking at the reasons why these children grow up in such poverty.
This year Brophy will offer a new immersion experience to Los Angeles, from February 13th to February 18th. This new offering is modeled after the Urban Plunge Loyola High School in Los Angeles has offered successfully to their students for several years. Students will spend four days immersed in downtown Los Angeles visiting social service agencies, volunteering at Dolores Mission and Homeboyz Industries, and learning about the most pressing issues an urban center faces particularly homelessness and gang activity. Students and their faculty leaders will walk and make use of public transportation while meals and sleeping accommodations will be arranged through local missions. During the second spring break, a group of Brophy
students travel to New
Orleans to assist with Katrina relief, an effort that
continues to need support. This week long immersion trip is intense
both with labor and with prayer and reflection. The student will
spend time learning what life is like for those who have survived
the Katrina tragedy, and are asked to look towards their call
as 'men for others.' The New Orleans trip will run March 24-29, 2008. Please click here for an application.
Also during the second spring break Brophy will send a group of students and faculty to Alderson, West Virginia for a week-long immersion experience. While in rural West Virginia the students will directly experience the poverty that exists in Appalachia, learn about the federal prison system and serve the community in any way necessary. The Appalachia trip will run March 24-29, 2008. Please click here for an application.
